One of the Right's favorite accusations is that liberals side with the terrorists. What's the STF rule?
U.S. diplomats have conceded ground to Islamists on the role of religion in Iraq, negotiators said on Saturday...Bush invades secular Iraq to set up an Islamic state. Jeeze. Could things be going better for bin Laden, the Taliban and Iran? How soon will women here be forced to wear burkas and stay at home?
"We understand the Americans have sided with the Shi'ites," he said. "It's shocking. It doesn't fit American values. They have spent so much blood and money here, only to back the creation of an Islamist state ... I can't believe that's what the Americans really want or what the American people want."
[. . .] An official of one of the main Shi'ite Islamist parties in the interim government confirmed the deal on law and Islam.

As I understand it, Bin Laden's a (extremist) Sunni, not a Shi'ite, so this actually isn't his dream world.

The Bushies got what they wanted on day one. The pre-invasion Iraqi constitution -- yeah, there was one, and it was not bad -- had elements that protected real people from economic elites and established some economic rights. They're long gone and are totally off the table in the new Bush Corporate Republic of Iraq. That's all that really matters. The sectarian issues that remain trouble only the Iraqis themselves and the Bushies domestic theocrat bitches and are thus treated ultimately with indifference and contempt. The real issues are settled safely and that's what really counts.
It takes a score card to keep track, but if I've got it right, the majority group in Iraq is the Shi'ites, who were originally Persian, solidly opposed to the Arabic Sunni. Saddam was allied with the smaller group, the Arabic Sunni, not the Shi'ites. Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban gave sanctuary and training in their training camps to the SSB, a group of Shi'ites; one of the most obvious reasons for serious doubts that Iraq could possibly have had anything to do with 9/11.
In that case, Dave's right. Once we got rid of Saddam, the Shi'ites, by far the larger group, aligned with Iran, and of course with Bin Laden, would quite naturally be in power. So we've accomplished the exact opposite of what we supposedly set out to accomplish.
