Immediate Politicization of Katrina

-- by Dave Johnson

I'm away at a trade show in Indianapolis, but found a Starbucks for a few minutes online.

Bush immediately took advantage of the Katrina tragedy to boost the Republican Party corporate agenda. Two days ago: Bush allows contractors to pay lower wages

Coming soon:

G.O.P. Sees Opportunities Arising From Storm
,

Republican leaders in Congress and some White House officials see opportunities in Hurricane Katrina to advance longstanding conservative goals like giving students vouchers to pay for private schools, paying churches to help with temporary housing and scaling back business regulation.

[. . .] "...FEMA says they can't reimburse faith-based organizations," Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the House majority leader, said... Mr. DeLay ... added that Congress should also allow students displaced by the hurricane to use vouchers to pay for tuition at private schools. Conservatives have championed school vouchers for decades.

[. . .] Republican lawmakers and administration officials are contemplating tax cuts intended to draw companies and workers back to New Orleans, regulatory changes to speed the expansion of oil refineries and scores of smaller changes to improve the recovery.

They always do that. Narcissists and sociopaths learn the behavioral properties of objects known as humans through observation and experimentation. They apply those lessons to produce the desired effects from human-objects. Telling us not to do X simply gives them a jump-start on doing X themselves. To them, it isn't hypocrisy: it's a tactic that works.

Screw 'em. Politicise the hell out of it. Pile it on. Kick 'em while they're down. Scream and shout and make sure everyone you know is crystal clear where accountability belongs. And why. In detail.
