The brazenness of the Republican PR machine is almost impossible to describe.
After years passing out pork and presiding over the highest deficits in American history, for example, Tom Delay has just declared victory in the budget wars -- claiming that the Republicans have finally cut out all the fat.
So now Karl Rove will be free to throw as much money at the Gulf Coast as he wants to, in order to advance the Republican campign operation he's headed for so long.
FEMA, of course, was managed entirely by campaign operatives, which accounts for its enormous success with Hurricane Katrina. ("Brownie" was a campaign operative, but there were many others; for two examples, look here and here.)
DHS and FEMA have operated primarily as PR organizations from the very beginning of the Bush Administration. Katrina was a little glitch in the operation, so the biggest PR expert of them all, Karl Rove, was sent in as fixer.
And it might work. If it does, that means that there's no reality outside PR, so that democracy has been neutralized. The voters are willing to put up with anything whatsover, and are no longer a factor in the political equation.
Finger-pointing might be all we can do. The actual villains (ideologues, grafters, religious fanatics, and mercenaries) are primarily to blame, of course, but the two groups I'll never be able to forgive are the "moderate Republicans and rational conservatives" who voted for Bush twice, and the media people who have been enabling the Bush-Rove lies -- and that's almost all of them, starting with Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. and Donald Graham.

Why would it ever occur to you to "forgive" the media? Would you forgive Rove? Bush? Cheney? Halliburton? Wal-Mart? Mellon Scaife?
THEY ARE ALL IDENTICALLY THE SAME THING!
The hard-core perps won't ask or expect forgiveness, but I expect moderates and media people to come along at some point and say "If I'd only known....."
Bear in mind that I expect the other side to get considerably worse. They haven't shown all their stiff yet.
So this is what they meant when they said "we create our own reality." With a blank check from congress Karl Rove may very well try to make sure there is "no reality outside PR" business."
As Josh Marshal suggested yesterday, when lives are at stake, Bush is playing guitar, when politics is at stake we get a domestic Marshal Plan.
GIven that, had such a calamity occured under a Kerry or Gore presidency, I doubt this Congress would be so generous with federal revenues.
