The Chris Matthews "Democrats=Terrorists" Fight Escalates

-- by Dave Johnson

At the Open Letter To Chris Matthews blog there is a new push, asking readers to contact MSNBC, and a few of their advertisers, asking Chris Matthews for an apology for comparing people like us to Osama bin Laden.

This Frequently Asked Questions post expains why we are so upset, what Matthews said, what we want, and how readers can help pressure for an apology.
6. What will it take for you to call off your protest?

Chris Matthews and the senior management of MSNBC need to publicly apologize for comparing American critics of the war in Iraq to terrorist Osama bin Laden, and both must commit to stop functioning as an adjunct of the right-wing noise machine and to start acting like objective journalists.

We are trying to stop this "Democrats = Terrorists" mantra now, before it becomes even more dangerous.

The President launched this campaign, using "the language of treason", saying that Democrats are providing "comfort to our adversaries." The usual suspects then began to echo the charge, saying that Democrats = Terrorists.

Then a supposedly responsible journalist on a supposedly major media outlet compared Democrats to bin Laden, and we decided we have had enough.

If you have had enough of this, make a stand. Visit Open Letter to Chris Matthews and add YOUR voice to this effort.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again: Matthew's said OBL sounded like Moore.

Ask yourself, who said this

the majority of Americans supported this war once it began and, sadly, that majority must now sacrifice their children until enough blood has been let that maybe — just maybe — God and the Iraqi people will forgive [them] in the end.

sound like something you heard translated from Arabic from a guy in a cave? Only if Moore speaks Arabic since that was part of a statement that appeared (now removed) on his website.

Also, consider that the left has said, preceeding this event, that many "right-wingers" sound like and have goals identical to the Fundie Muslims.

If you can't take it don't dish it out.

You want to talk about who SOUNDS LIKE bin Laden?

How about people who support the death penalty, want government-sponsored prayer and religious displays, want to make abortion a crime ... I could run down a whole list of how al Queda SOUNDS LIKE the Repubican Party.

You liberal democrats DO in fact speak the same spew as Osama bin Laden!

Below are a few excerpts from OBL’s taped speech, remember, Osama is a sworn enemy of the United States, and he is responsible for killing 3,000 innocent men, women, and children on 9/11 and other atrocities against the U.S. and U.S. interests. After each OBL claim, I’ve included a statement(s) by a liberal ‘leader’:

OBL: “My message to you is about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and the way to end it. I was not intending to speak about this subject, because for us it’s obvious; blood for blood, and all praise be to Allah, our situation is getting better and better while your situation is the opposite.”

Howard Dean in an interview with WOAI radio in San Antonio, 12/05/2005 : "The idea that we are going to win this war is an idea that unfortunately is just plain wrong." Dean also called Bush's plan in Iraq a "failed strategy."

OBL: “I say that the war in Iraq is boiling up without end and the operations in Afghanistan are continuing in our favor, all praise be to Allah.”

Ted Kennedy in a speech to the Brookings Institution, a Washington Think Tank: "Iraq is George Bush's Vietnam."

OBL: “The reality shows that the war against America and its allies has not been limited to Iraq as he (Bush) claims. Iraq has become a point of attraction and restorer of (our) energies.”

John Kerry in a 01/22/2006 appearance on ABC’s “This Week”: "Many people surmise that one of the reasons we haven't been attacked here is because [terrorists] are being so successful at doing what they need to do to attack us in Iraq and elsewhere."

OBL: “On the other hand, Jihad is continuing, all praise be to Allah, despite all the atrocities committed by the American army and its agents; to a point where there is no differentiation between its crimes and those of Saddam’s.”

Dick Durbin in a Senate floor speech, 6/2005: "If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings."

OBL: “ All the reports show that the defeat and grave failure for the cursed quartet of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz.”

John Kerry, again in a 01/22/2006 appearance on ABC’s “This Week”: and there has been an "absence of leadership."

John Murtha, speaking to the press after a democrat strategy session, 11/17/2005: “It is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering, the future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action in Iraq is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf region.”

----------------
The above quotes are inter-changeable between OBL and the democrats folks! Whose team are the liberals on? It seems the democrats are in lock step with Osama.

We're the good guys! And despite liberating millions of people in Afghanistan, despite establishing democracy there, despite the ousting Saddam Hussein in Iraq - a terrible dictator, despite liberating millions of people in Iraq, despite tyrants being replaced by free elections in both countries, despite improvements in schools, hospitals, roads, infrastructure…. democrats would rather side with OBL, than with TEAM USA. Democrats and Osama bin Laden, singing the same tune.

Think about that when you vote this fall.

Readers - the above coment shows what is so dangerous about having a President intent on dividing the country for the benefit of his political party. This kind of hate-speech is encouraged by the President. But where can it lead?

Posted by: Dave Johnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 25, 2006 1:52 PM

Sickofspin's comment is itself an unmistakable example of fascism , using fear, smear, and the most dishonest use of conflation that is to be imagined. The domestic enemies of democracy and reason now present their cause before the nation, and no longer rely on any principle of national unity, fairness, or appreciation of informed dissent. Their objective no longer rests on innuendo or any coded or sly language. Their wish is only to annul dissent and destroy the dissenter. Dishonesty, fakery, and malicious rhetoric move them ever closer to their goal.

They would brand as disloyal, any effort on our part to assign blame to the Bush administration for its failed policy. They would make it a crime to even ascribe failure to a failed policy. These busy authoritarians work night and day to distort fact and to thwart the public's right to know. It is they who seek political benefits out of pre-emptive, aggressive war. It is they who pour honeyed words over eavesdropping and data-minining and other avenues of domestic spying and political infiltration. And now the final tactic of bullies: the branding, the scapegoating.

The right wing extremists have tipped their hand, and the public would be blind not to see what these enemies of democracy and discourse are trying to do. It is obvious that under no circumstances should republicans, democrats, or independents sit back and remain silent.

Dave,

The GOP is 'dividing the country?' Puuuulllleeeeaaassseeeee.....

You don't hear any GOP leaders sounding like OBL. You DO hear liberals sounding like him though and it's up above in black and white. The GOP is country first, the dems are indeed party first. You simply don't say the things liberals are saying if you are truly putting national security, support for our troops, and fighting terrorism ahead of party favor. You liberals are doing anything BUT doing what it takes to win and maintain the security and integrity of this great nation.

You want to cut military funding, but bitch about how generals do their job. You pretend you want to obtain victory, then propose we cut and run. Hypocrites, all of you..... You folks lie, cheat, manipulate, and spin. You don't give a rat's rear end about the truth, you put party first. It's pathetic the crap you try to pull.

Bush and the GOP have been steadfast in the war against terrorism. You liberals have been all over the map. Bush and the GOP have been consistent in message from day one, you liberals have changed your tune so many times you have to take your shoes off to count.

QUIT LYING!

Posted by: Sickofspin at January 25, 2006 10:04 PM

Oh, and you liberals don't like the the OBL statements being compared to the liberal leader statements because you can't stand the truth in it. The statements are indeed interchangeable. OBL is a democrat, liberals are terrorist sypathizers.... Take your pick.

As with all talking heads in the corporate media, Chris Mathews' real interest is his celebrety status. He will say anything, spew any bile, tell any lie to keep that celebrety status at a high level.

A few reminders. First, we are not "at war" in Iraq. We are conducting an occupation. Second, the "war" we're supposedly conducting is the "war on terror." Third, we still have no sane definition of the word "terrorist." A "terrorist" is whatever this administration doesn't like and whatever this administration doesn't like has to be equated not only with "terrorist" but with "traitor." That's how they intend to keep winning elections. It's pretty obvious that Chris Matthews was testing out the latest spin. If that weren't true, we wouldn't have so many trolls pushing the same agenda in this thread.

The whole concept of "bringing Democracy to the Middle-East" seems to be backfiring pretty badly, doesn't it? What happens when we don't like the results? Yesterday's election, which Hammas won, certainly seems to have been extremely Democratic, with much more participation by the local citizens than ever happens in our own country, and the same is true of the election in Iran, the results of which are now scaring the shit out of us. So what's next? We go subvert the results of those democratic elections, as we've done successfully in S. America, except that we haven't managed to succeed yet in Venezuela? How is the administration going to spin THIS? Or will they even bother to try?
