In Trouble in Cubicle Nation, "with soaring workweeks, declining wages, and health, pension and vacation benefits vanishing faster than you can say job security," Joe Robinson has some suggestions for improving the workplace, including:
Restore the 40-hour workweek. Almost 40 percent of us are working more than 50 hours a week, not exactly what the Fair Labor Standards Act intended when it set the 40-hour workweek in 1938. ...
Legalize vacations. Almost a third of American women and a quarter of men don't get vacation leave anymore because, unlike 96 other countries, the U.S. has no paid-leave law. ...
Provide guaranteed sick leave. No one should have to lose a job because they get ill. But across this land, hardworking people are getting fired simply because their company offers no sick days and they got sick. ...Go read.
Support a living wage. With the skyrocketing costs of gas, food and rent, an increase in the minimum wage is long overdue. Consumers need to support companies that pay a living wage, such as Costco, and shun ones that don't.

I was fired once because I got pregnant, and at the U. of Michigan I had no vacation time for years because I was given trimester appointments, but I had kids to support. My situation was far from unique. Laws are only as good as those who enforce them.

Dave, I've mentioned this before, to little notice. I regularly email you leads, with little notice too. One of the reasons this blog gets less traffic than it might, is that it sets up lousy in Several browsers. When I was on dial up it took minutes. On broadband, it still takes about 30 seconds, and flashes on and off for a few seconds after that on IE. Is there ANY browser that works well with the site, or do I just have to confine my viewing to Firefox, which does seem a bit quicker? And if leads sent to you or posted just never get to you or commented upon/used, why should anyone bother, right? Regards, 'VJ'

What versions are you using?
I usually use FireFox PC. But I am using IE 6 now and it loaded fine. I did have problems when I first set up on Movable Type but I thought I had solved them.
Movable Type has a new set up style sheets and I could switch to them. I know the new set addresses all the browsers.
