The Public

-- by Dave Johnson

I often think blogs and blog-readers are in a hyper-informed bubble. We are gaining influence with the DC insiders, and are reaching some people who influence the public. But WE are not reaching out very far yet. We need to find ways to reach a wider audience.

Meanwhile, America twists on under the spell of the wingnuts. Gun owners accuse UN of July 4 conspiracy,

Americans mistakenly worried the United Nations is plotting to take away their guns on July 4 -- U.S. Independence Day -- are flooding the world body with angry letters and postcards, the chairman of a U.N. conference on the illegal small arms trade said on Wednesday.

"I myself have received over 100,000 letters from the U.S. public, criticizing me personally, saying, 'You are having this conference on the 4th of July, you are not going to get our guns on that day,"' said Prasad Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka's U.N. ambassador.

... The campaign is largely the work of the U.S. National Rifle Association, whose executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, warns on an NRA Web site (http://www.stopungunban.org/) of a July 4 plot "to finalize a U.N. treaty that would strip all citizens of all nations of their right to self-protection."

So the NRA just makes this shit up, and 100,000 letters are sent. (And the message ties right in to the John Birch Society Get US Out of the UN camaign.) Does anyone smell pre-election activities?

Looking at this ability to get the public going, and the kind of funding it takes, do you really think the Dems have a chance to take the House or Senate? Do you get what I am saying here? Remember the "Democrats are going to ban the Bible?" It worked.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and you're right. My hunch is that this is why NYC has had 40% of its Homeland Security funds cut, too. Mayor Bloomberg is organizing other mayors to get guns in urban areas under control. So NY is the enemy, not terrorists. And of course the UN meets here. There's nothing rational about anything that's going on. The NRA and the John Birch Society speak, and it's understood to be the Voice of God.

Dave, as a lifetime member of the NRA, perhaps I can shed a little light on this issue. We at the NRA have been aware of the UN's desire to ban private ownership of guns for many years. Our membership has been active over that time in trying to derail the UN's desires. The issue has come to a head recently, and we have mobilized our membership. The NRA is sponsoring the "Shot Heard Round The World", on the 4th of July. It is our desire to have millions of gun owners speak with one thundering voice of outrage, in order to stop the global gun ban treaty. The Reuters article you have posted here is an inaccurate response to our action. The NRA site you yourself posted here states that the UN Conference is meeting OVER our 4th of July Holiday, not ON the 4th of July. The Reuters article begins with an opinion stated as fact that we are MISTAKENLY worried, because the UN doesn't meet ON the 4th of July. How childish and silly. The UN is meeting on this treaty from June 27 - July 7.

Of course you guys will believe this nonsense, because it really doesn't matter what the facts are. The only thing that matters here is the ideology. There's alot more out there to be seen, if you care to look.

Well, Happy, the odd thing is that in this household we have paid that NRA way too many dues as far as I'm concerned. But you know fact is I'm not the only one who lives here.I did admittingly buy into one of their crazy we're gonna lose our guns thing one year and joined myself.Well, we all make boo boos sometimes. They are still spending megabucks on sending me tons of mailings all the time, and very often telephone calls too.Even though I have been honest with them and said go ---.Well you get the idea.I have yet to see the damn cap they promised about 20 years ago.You know the elusive free cap.
Really my point is that this household has plenty of guns. We're reasonable people mind you, or at any rate I think we are.Personally,I cannot base my vote on who the heck might take away or save my guns.If it actually comes to such a crazy thing.I'll find a lead box and bury them somewhere. What we see here, and my husband still belongs, much to my dismay but he says too, they take all my dues for a year and send it back to me in the postage they use to send me mailings I'm not interested in.I think he's finally geeting dicouraged.I keep saying..and where the heck is that free cap.
