Stop Saying 'Single-Payer' PLEASE

-- by Dave Johnson

A letter-to-the-editor titled, "Single-payer plan is the way to go" in the San Jose Mercury News this morning reminded me to keep this drumbeat going. PLEASE stop saying "single-payer" and start saying "Medicare For All."

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT "SINGLE-PAYER" MEANS!!! I was talking to someone last week who thought "single-payer" means you have to pay all your medical bills by yourself with no help. That's what it sounds like it means, and no one understands what it means otherwise, so why would anyone think it is a good thing? But everyone understands what Medicare is, and loves it, so why not just say "Medicare For All?" Sheesh!

Sounds like a wonderful teaching moment! I actually prefer single-payer, especially since Medicare for All is now corrupted with High Drug Prices for All, and Buy Supplemental Coverage for All.

I tell people that Americans don't really want better or cheaper health insurance. We don't give a shit about insurance, we want health care and we want it high quality and we want it free for everyone.

The only way there is to take the insurance companies out of the picture entirely.

How about health care for people, not for profit?

Let's re-frame it, re-spin it and re-package it but let's never compromise it or negotiate it.
