Today's Obama Smear Attempt -- See Update

-- by Dave Johnson

Here's one of the ways the right's smear machine works. Far-right blogs post something. Then a site higher up their food chain picks it up, like NewsMax, CNSNews, WorldNetDaily or Politico. Then the Drudge Report or Moon's Washington Times gets it from there and spreads the story further. Somewhere in there Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity talks about it on the air. Finally the corporate media picks it up and uses the excuse that "the story is circulating."

Here's an example today. "Someone" posted an anti-semitic comment at the Obama blog. (See if you can guess who posted a comment that a right-wing blog knew about a few minutes later.) A few minutes later the hate site Little Green Footballs wrote a post saying that the Obama blog says so-and-so. (If you don't know about this site, spend a few minutes there and you'll get the picture. No, it is not a parody of right-wing nuttiness.) Then dozens of far-right-wing sites quickly echoed the "story." It rapidly turns into a great big right-wing hissy fit.

Soon the right's Politico has picked it up. (Which shows they're spending time reading hate sites.) And then Rush Limbaugh talked about it on his show.

You see, someone (guess who) leaving a comment at the Obama site proves that Obama is anti-semitic. You'll be hearing about it from every direction very soon.

Here is what Politico wrote:

Little Green Footballs finds some eyebrow-raisin stuff on Obama's site with the search term "Jewish Lobby." Of course, it's not fair to hold Obama responsible for the occasional crazy post. But it seems reasonable to try to characterize the community, something I haven't seen done, and it's interesting to see what gets taken down and what doesn't -- inevitably a community and moderator choice.
So bloggers - watch out. Right-wingers are posting vile comments at blogs, and then claiming that blog's readers are saying vile things.

Update - Little Green Footballs is sending people over here to saturate us with nasty comments. This one is an example of what to expect from that site (And I do have the IP address proving who it came from): "It's pretty obvious that Davey is so blind queer for 'the boy with the
pickaninny dick' that he is willing to tell any lie necessary 'for the
cause'...even if it's laughably false on its face...maybe he's bucking to
be Barky's personal bitch faggot....if so,he's doing a good job of it"

How do you define “far-right” these days?

Christian fundies?
Jewey neo-cons?
Hitler?
or Neo-Hitlers?

I’ve seen many writers/bloggers slapped with that label. What is the standard by which defines the far-right?

Posted by: libfam at June 9, 2008 8:25 PM

In this case I'd say blatant racism and Muslim eliminationism.

Posted by: Dave Johnson [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 9, 2008 8:28 PM

Care to share with us some IP addresses which point to right-wingers who left those comments?

Posted by: Macker [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 10, 2008 5:51 PM

No- those posts were on obama's site for months, but you know- why research what you're talking about before opening your mouth and exposing your ignorance.

Posted by: Sharmuta [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 10, 2008 5:52 PM

There were many, many blog posts that were absolutely inappropriate on a presidential candidate's web site. It was not just one or two "comments".

And they were left there, for everyone to see, for MONTHS. There is no need for "right wingers" to post rabid stuff on web sites - the leftists do that already.

Or are you really just angry that it was pointed out?

Posted by: Racer X at June 10, 2008 5:52 PM

Goodness! What would a left-wing smear look like? Or does such a thing not exist?

Posted by: MajorPribluda at June 10, 2008 5:53 PM

Any facts to back up your claims? Not necessary? Okay then.

Posted by: m-b grid at June 10, 2008 5:54 PM

Thanks for what you said. Obama seems like a sweatheart, someone that can bring us together. When I look at Obama I get this warm feeling, and one things for sure: he is not Bush. Shouldn't that be enough for him to be a president? I think I know the answer.

Posted by: Rainbow at June 10, 2008 5:54 PM

Well..with Obama..as much crap already on him, what difference does it make

Posted by: Rise_Up at June 10, 2008 5:54 PM

In your article, you said, "So bloggers - watch out. Right-wingers are posting vile comments at blogs, and then claiming that blog's readers are saying vile things."

That is a conclusion, and it would be interesting to know what information you have that led you to that conclusion.

One of the "blogs" at Obama's site was a fake, and the person who did it owned up to it (not a LGFer).

But what about all the other "blogs" that were so vile at Obama's site?

Posted by: reine at June 10, 2008 5:55 PM

Anyone who disagrees with the left on any issue is a racist, bigot, or far right winger. By the way, I don't want to eliminate Muslims...I just want Muslim fundamentalists to stop trying to kill Americans.

Posted by: brian at June 10, 2008 5:56 PM

Hey dude, I want some of whatever you're smoking!

If you seriously believe EVERY SINGLE ONE of these disgusting antisemitic, 9/11 conspiracy theory, pro-Marxist, ... pages was planted by Charles Johnson you gotta be toking some serious sheet, d00d!

Posted by: Former Belgian at June 10, 2008 5:57 PM

Too funny. I guess it was a conspiracy to keep hundreds of those posts up on Obama's website for months. So, let me get this straight. "Right wingers" plot to upload hundreds if not thousands of crazy pages onto Obama's website. Then, 3 or 4 months later, they point out the existence of those pages. Do you even realize how insane that sounds?

Look on the bright side though, Obama's team is looking for a new web guy:

I define the far-left by its blatant racism and Jewish eliminationism.

That's you Dave. Just another tool of hate.

I wonder about all those My Obama blogs with the "Hillary Supporters are all stupid!" theme. I bet Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity posted all of those!

OMG! OMG!

Posted by: Rainbow at June 10, 2008 5:59 PM

Calling LGF a "hate site" is a pretty weak straw man. Please point to one hateful thing Charles has posted.

Conflating anonymous comments with approved blogs is like confusing graffiti with the building it's on. It's fair enough to say that Obama didn't know about that stuff. But if not one of the 700 people he hired on the campaign was tasked with moderating his site or setting up even amateur-level web security it indicates that he doesn't know how to run an organization. Last I checked, there were something north of 700 people working in the Federal Government. If the man can't steer a tricycle I really don't want to give him the keys to a 747.

Posted by: Craig at June 10, 2008 5:59 PM

Nice typo, too, Dave. Not only do you not know what you're talking about, you can't even articulate it.

Hope! Change! Unity! Now let's silence the bastards! Oh, well, I had heard that the left was tolerant; obviously I was mistaken. I even thought you might be interested in what really happened and would dig the truthy elements.

Who watches the vetters that vet the watchers?

Posted by: mich-again at June 10, 2008 6:01 PM

Dave Johnson said: In this case I'd say blatant racism and Muslim eliminationism [define the far right].
Look, at LGF, those two pernicious attitudes are deleted as soon as possible, and earn a permanent ban for the poster. Wherever you are finding this sort of stuff, it's not LGF.
So here are some easy, direct questions, numbered for your convenience:
1. Are you calling Charles Johnson a racist?

2. Are you calling Charles Johnson a "Muslim eliminationist" (whatever that means)?

3. Are you calling any LGF commenter a racist?

4. Are you calling any LGF commenter a "Muslim eliminationist"?

If your answer to any of these questions is "yes", then can you please provide a shred of evidence?

Posted by: MajorPribluda at June 10, 2008 6:03 PM

I hate to break up this little fantasy party you are throwing, but you can actually tell who posted the blogs in question as well as the comments. If it was the big C, don't you think it would have merited a flashing red light on Drudge at the very least?

By virtue of your very inaccurate description of the site, I can reasonably surmise you have never really gone to there yourself. I strongly suggest you visit LGF for real - if you dare. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Posted by: Rainbow at June 10, 2008 6:08 PM

Obviously, posting articles related to Islamic terrorism somehow means that LGFers are Muslim eliminationists. Does that make sense to anyone? Anyone?

How about the far right comment? Hmmmm. So, anbody who is opposed to Obama being the president is far right? Guys, get a clue. If you would actually read the website, you would find many substantive arguments on why Obama should not be president. Today alone, we learn that the head of his VP election committee was a big player in the sub-prime mortgage mess. Did you see the video of Obama responding to the crisis:

Boy its gamey in here. Dave, you ignorant fool. Spend some time at LGF. You might learn something. You might learn that racism and hate is not tolerated there (Unlike Obama's site). I think a site keeping us aware, among many other things, of the 11,000 attacks and 30,000+ killed in the name of Islam SINCE 9/11 is worth giving some of your attention.

Please note that at right wing gatherings racist comments rarely happen where as at any leftwing gathering racism is front and center. the comments you claim right-wingers posted at Obama's site, are commonplace on the left. Read Huffpo, Kos, go to Zombietime and check out lefty protests. Its all you baby. Not us.

"In this case I'd say blatant racism and Muslim eliminationism.
Posted by: Dave Johnson"

Dave, please point to A SINGLE post by Charles Johnson at LGF that contains even subtle racism much less "blatant racism," and while you're at it please point to a SINGLE LGF post OR comment at LGF that contains "Muslim eliminationism." Otherwise, your description of LGF is nothing but hot air.

You obviously know nothing about the site, you just believe the baseless smears against it, generally spread by far-left extremists and/or by Islamic fundamentalists and its sympathizers.

LGF is in fact an ANTI-hate site and an ANTI-racism site, and Charles Johnson may in fact be more socially liberal than you on some issues, believe it or not. In fact the only main difference between "Seeing the Forest" and "Little Green Footballs" (aside from LGF having 1000x the readership) is that LGF understands the epochal significance of the "war on terror" as it has been called -- that it is in a fact a defensive war against religious extremists who want to undo centuries of liberal democracy.

Why do you feel the need to be on the same side as the religious extremists? And if that question makes no sense to you, why can't you understand that you are helping radical fundamentalists who want to overthrow the liberal utopia we've created, known as "Western civilization"?

Posted by: Evile Jew Conspirator at June 10, 2008 6:45 PM

What say? Somebody posted "A" (as in "ONE") anti-semitic comment, and then "a few minutes later ... "

When did you start writing complete fiction?

There were a huge number of outrageous blogs on the Obama site that were up there for MONTHS without any of the Obama supporters flagging them as offensive and getting them removed - the dates on the postings left no question of that fact.

When did "months" change into a "few minutes," and when did "many" change to "one"? And since when did pages of anti-semitic garbage (as in "Jew-hating," not "criticism of Israel"), complete with connections to an extensive antiJewish website containing a lot more of the same material with even more of the same peculiar style of Jew-slandering graphics and with an anti-Jewish monthly newsletter, become "a single anti-semitic comment"? That first one (of many offensive blogs) was so extensive that it is beyond belief that anyone would have created it just as a dirty trick to be able to issue a fake complaint about it.

Given how completely falsified the rest of your claims are, your fantasy invented on the basis of nothing except a desire to cover for Obama's website - that right wingers planted the offensive blogs - is utterly absurd.

Perhaps you should get your facts straight before commenting on them, and have some accurate information, if not evidence, before hurling accusations.

I have found LGF to be a very refreshing and honest site that has put a spotlight on Islamic terrorism that has been spreading across the world. I've seen the site repeatedly fact check and go out of it's way to separate the facts from rumors. I have never a single promotion of racism on the site.

I use to be a Daily KOS kid. I grew sick of the constant antisemitism, anti-Americanism, and open dishonestly on liberal sites. Now I'm an independent conservative and read LGF every day.

That's not an argument, Dave. You don't even have one, do you? Nice attempt to dismiss the facts of the matter out of hand because they don't adhere to your worldview, but the world can see your theory has no basis in facts- that it's completely unsubstantiated. Believe it or not- facts do still matter to some people. Don't look now- but your fallacy is showing.

Posted by: Sharmuta [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 10, 2008 7:04 PM

Geez, there are a lot of flames in here, and I didn't bring my Johnsonville brats!

Frankly I don't believe for a second that evil conservatives or evil liberals are posting on the opposition sites in some kind of convoluted "False Flag" operation. Its juvenile. and will not change anyone's mind I might add. People believe what the want to believe and it is rare that you will really influence anyone with crap like that. The only ones who are really left to sway are the boobs who aren't paying attention in the first place. If they aren't paying attention, then ergo, they are unlikely to be visiting the sites, right?
I suppose though that flaming here and elsewhere beats sitting around watching sitcoms or porn all night.
Hmmm?

Posted by: sojerofgod at June 10, 2008 7:10 PM

Also, I think calling LGF racist is somewhat ironic in that LGF is anti-extremism in general. It would be like calling the Americans who fought against the Nazis in WWII "fascist anti-German racists!!!"

Now imagine the insanity of letting Hitler setup a civil liberties organization for Nazis during the war in the US and then letting his people sue Americans and file hate crime against anyone criticizing the Holocaust while it happened. Now imagine Nazis setting up Nazi youth groups on our colleges while we are at war with them, using the our freedom of speech with a sneer.

Is it wrong to get worried when you see the local Muslim student groups posting posters promoting honest to god terror organizations and with them screaming about discrimination while they bully anyone that criticizes them?

Reality.

What an inverted world we live in. When filthy racist postings are uncovered, it gets turned around into an article on how the right wing smear machine works. Did I get that right?

Let us assume for a moment that it was an evil right wing smear campaign. Okay. What does that say about the competence of the Obama team that hostile forces were able to sabotage a site in such a well-orchestrated fashion for months and months? Now ask yourself if you can trust Obama to be entrusted with the nation's national security. You also missed one other key point in this whole fiasco: whole directories were left open and vulnerable. Was that done by an LGF operative working clandestinely at Obama World Headquarters?

You might enjoy visiting LGF sometime. Quite a bunch of critical thinkers over there.

The nUtTy theory that the Obama site was infiltrated by LGF is a dusted off version of the one from 2004 that said Karl Rove fed the false TANG memos to Dan Rather and CBS.

As if Karl could have really predicted a professional news organization such as CBS would have fallen for them for two minutes and would be so utterly incompetent to believe them to be legitimate.

Same in this case. Is there any way that anyone would have figured the Official Website of the Obama for President Campaign would have let so much vile crapola stay on the site for months and months?

Its a really bad conspiracy theory you're proposing here Dave. Good CT's have at least a shred of a possibility to be true.

If I were you, I'd blame it on Obama's ex-website director. He/she was probably a Howard Ickes plant. BTW, keep us posted on who Obama hires to fill the slot as his new website director of security. We saw the help-wanted ad on his site today. Nice. We'll volunteer to help Obama vet his vetters seeing as his grass roots campaign can't afford such a wasteful expenditure.

Where is Dave? I keep waiting for him to post the proof leading to his conclusion that "right-wingers" posted the vile blogs to begin with. Surely he has something; he wouldn't say, "Right-wingers are posting vile comments at blogs, and then claiming that blog's readers are saying vile things", unless he had some evidence of it, would he?

Come on, if you would stop chanting that Obama mantra for a minute (wait, doesn't that seem a lot like . . . goose stepping???), you would realize that the only candidate actually advocating compulsive ideologies is Barack Obama. If he does get elected, I hope BO's plan to bring "hope" and "change" and "unity" is better thought out than yours ("suck it" . . .).

Posted by: Drew at June 10, 2008 8:21 PM

Journalistic standards obviously mean nothing to you, but calling a blog a "hate site" for no real reason and accusing its creator of posting hateful blurbs on Obama's site with no actual proof is beyond the pale.

Dailykos and other liberal sites have been getting the same anti-semitic crap from the fascistic left for years. It is no surprise this scourge is popping up amongst supporters of the Obamessiah.

If you truly were a tolerant liberal, you would focus fire on the evil people in your own party who post such vile content. Instead, you take unsubstantiated potshots at someone who points out the true evildoers.

And I'm sure mental luminaries with clever monikers such as phuknjrk, Evile Jew Conspirator, typical_white_person, baboo, fagbasher and buttpirate, or one who profoundly and maturely tells Obama to "Suck it, lizardoid scum!" would never dream of doing such a thing as sabotaging a reality-based site with hate.

There's a good reason most right-wing sites have to control or eliminate comments and discussion while most other sites allow comments from all comers, at least those who can handle a little intellectual freedom and do not always come calling with hatred and vitriol.

Posted by: rollotomasi at June 10, 2008 9:52 PM

Dave Johnson: We are still waiting for an answer to ANY question posed by the LGF-ers here.
Additionally, why do you tolerate the abuse being spewed by "squirbells"? Is this the tone we should expect from your site? Questions not even acknowledge, much less answered, but lots of childish invective?

And tell us again about how messed-up the right wing is on the internet. Charles Johnson of LGF runs a contentious site which is dedicated to freedom and does not tolerate racism or advocacy of violence. Your site, not so much.

I'll check back on this thread for any developments. I'm not going anywhere else on your site.

Sharmuta, do you know what "most" means? As I said, these sites allow those who can handle their intellectual freedom and not act like the jerks and rabid pack dogs that most (there's that word again, don't trip over it) of you right-wingers are here.

Posted by: MajorPribluda at June 11, 2008 2:26 AM

Hello, did the auther of this blog explain the reason why he accused LGF of unethical behavior / planting lies on Obama's official website?

This blog identified LGF's list of a sample of pro-terrorism blogs hosted on Obama's official website, and then accused: "Right-wingers are posting vile comments at blogs, and then claiming that blog's readers are saying vile things." !

If this blog's author doesn't explain the reason for making that accusation, maybe the reason is that the author of this blog didn't have a reason, but a very strong feeling.

The strategy during the Democratic primaries was to capture the base. Obama is from Chicago, and his strategy to win a nomination based on liberal-socialist principles was apparently to figuratively unlock the loony bins and ask them all to vote for the one who offers them "hope" and "change".

The moral problem is that Obama differentiated himself from other candidates for the Democratic Party nomination by cornering himself into narrow promises demanded by his base, such as immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, regardless of the consequences.

Figuratively speaking, when pro-terrorists and extreme leftists saw a candidate for U.S. President who made promises to gain the support of an innocent peace-loving liberal frog, the scorpion jumped onto the back of the frog to ride it across the river (while blogging on the back of their candidate's base).

Does Obama want to be the President of the United States, or to divide the Union? Most Iraqis also want the U.S. to transfer military power to a capable sovereign civil government in Iraq, not surrender on a time schedule that terrorists can read.

The base now controlled by Obama is over-represented by bloggers like this, who seem to believe that dishonest mud-slinging is okay when their goal is pure, and who don't look at their own hands.

Mr. Obama doesn't sling mud. However, for months his official website hosted malarial swamps.

As they say in Chicago politics: Papa's got a brand new bag, and it's time to throw the old base like this blogger under the bus...

It seems "someone" (guess who) posted a homophobic comment on the Seeing the Forest blog. A few minutes later the hate site Seeing the Forest updated the post to say that a commenter from LGF says so-and-so.

So commenters - watch out. Left-wingers are posting vile comments at their own blogs, and then claiming that blog's commenters are saying vile things.

Wow. Accusing someone of something with no evidence in an attempt to deflect the original criticism is easier (and more fun) than I thought it would be.

Obama Campaign Setting Up Rapid-Reponse Team To Combat Viral Internet Smears

As Silent Patriot said,

This is very encouraging news, despite the fact that it’s sad that it’s even necessary.

This thread is a perfect demonstration of why this is unfortunately necessary. They can't win the argument so they attack the person, making it up as they go along. The right-wing attack dogs here could not have proven Dave Johnson's point any better if he had provided IP addresses.

I have a right-wing buddy that feeds me these email fictions all the time (they always are written in a folksy, man-on-the-street way to mask their true origins), so don't try to act like faking hate comments on a reality-based site is some sort of stretch from these blatant email deceptions. It's the way these extremists roll.

Just as Sura did, you are making statements based on the exact opposite of what has happened. Dave himself found that he could not win the argument (specifically, why anti-semetic comments were allowed to remain on an Obama blog), so instead he attacked the person (Charles and his readers), making it up as he went (no evidence at all to back his claim).

I heard someone claim recently "if you want to know what liberals are doing, watch what they accuse the other side of doing and you'll know." I don't think I've seen a better, more concise example of that than what's on this page.

I see the tactic now from McCain on down when responding to any criticism is to echo the criticism and just switch the name (from right-wing to reality-based). Clever. I guess when you run out of the talking points handed down to you, there's not much left.

Bigotry and class division have been the foundation of the right-wing movement over the last thirty years, and you are only fooling yourself if you cannot or choose not to see it. It is not coincidental there was more bigotry raised on this thread than probably in the last two years combined at this site when the right-wingers showed up. That is what you are about, and no amount of projection of your biases onto others will change that.

Simply amazing. This whole thing began with comments found on an Obama blog. Rather than condemn them or address the criticism of them, Dave accused LGF folks of planting the comments themselves - something he made up. When he is roundly criticized (as he should have been) and asked to provide evidence, rather than responding to that criticism, the finger is pointed back again at the right-wing attack machine, and Dave is simply a victim.

How do people make up accusations with no factual support, and then claim to be the "reality-based" community?

Thirty years of the right-wing making political hay on wedge issues based on race/religion/sexual orientation and expressions of hatred and hostility on a level unprecedented in these parts is enough factual support and reality for me. Even today, Obama has to put up a website to counteract your smears, many of which I had already seen in the emails I talked about earlier in the thread. Nothing else to prove.

We've already established you won't acknowledge any of this, so you can type until you are blue in the face; it only further supports Dave's point. Just because you want to turn your head from the inconvenient facts presented here doesn't mean they don't exist. I understand that you were told to come over here and attack where - like an obedient dog - that’s what you did, and really don’t care if you choose to bury your head in the sand. Build that wall of fear and ignorance as high as you like. In fact, I would be quite surprised if you reacted insightfully rather than belligerently.

Thirty years of the right-wing making political hay on wedge issues based on race/religion/sexual orientation and expressions of hatred and hostility on a level unprecedented in these parts is enough factual support and reality for me.

The logic here (and in Dave's original post) seems to be:

1. Conservatives are mean.
2. The comments on the Obama blog were mean.
3. Therefore, conservatives must have made them. No proof required.

We've already established you won't acknowledge any of this, so you can type until you are blue in the face; it only further supports Dave's point.

I'm happy to acknowledge, explain and be accountable for my own behavior and actions. Dave should be grown up enough to do the same.

Dave's (and yours as well) inability or unwillingness to acknowledge the dishonesty of his original post (or to support the claims with actual facts) further supports the point of everyone else who arrived here.

Dave's point was this:

So bloggers - watch out. Right-wingers are posting vile comments at blogs, and then claiming that blog's readers are saying vile things.

And again, the facts and your conclusions are opposites.

Just because you want to turn your head from the inconvenient facts presented here doesn't mean they don't exist.

Is this one of the "facts" that you refer to:

I have a right-wing buddy that feeds me these email fictions all the time (they always are written in a folksy, man-on-the-street way to mask their true origins)

You might consider this a "fact" that supports the original claim made by Dave, but it isn't and it doesn't.

In fact, I would be quite surprised if you reacted insightfully rather than belligerently.

Funny that you fist accuse me of using your own (and Dave's own) words, only having switched the names, and then accuse me of being belligerent. By insightful response did you mean like one of Dave's only responses to the criticisms and requests for proof posted here:

Stupid is as stupid does.

Awwww, you people need to STFU....this entire exercise has just been my way of gathering material for a book on the Obama campaign..."The self-beclowning of 'the boy with the pickaninny dick'"...so let's have some more flaming so I can get on with the next chapter

Stupid is as stupid does.

You got that right, Forrest Gump.

I think I just figured it out (and shame on me for taking this long). Dave is rollotomasi. That explains why Dave suddenly disappeared from the scene, and why rollo's responses come so quickly. Well Dave, I have to say - I feel a bit sorry for you now. I hope you get the help you need.

I heard someone claim recently "if you want to know what liberals are doing, watch what they accuse the other side of doing and you'll know." I don't think I've seen a better, more concise example of that than what's on this page.

^^^ THIS. Exactly.

Wow, seems like the Brown shirt weenies marched in unison didn't they?

Piss on them.

Seeing the Forest is a decent site. Thanks for showing the usual Right Wing scum as they are.

The Little Green Nazis are certainly a crude and moronic crew.

I guess the little Green Nazis proved who they are.

And anyone who doesn't agree with them is stupid, moronic or a traitor. And we who don't agree should be shot, just like Michael Reagan says we should, who is only famous as he is son of their Idol, Ronald Reagan, the clown.
