I'm not sure whether it's weakness or active betrayal. Democrats.com sent an email last summer alleging that the Democratic Party was planning on throwing the next few elections. I don't know how valid this is, but their behavior and messaging come quite close to that effect.
If there's one message I would like to get through to them, it's this. Poking your base in the eye is a terrible way to get them to put the extra effort in for you.
